Sin Nombre - (The Nameless) Mexico

Quote
Sin Nombre is a road trip movie that happens to take place on top of a train with one hundred or so immigrants attempting to subvert the harshness of life in exchange for the ability to create something better.

'Sayra' is a teenage girl reuniting with her father to join him on a trek from Honduras to a dream life in the United States. 'Willy' is a member of "Mara Salvatrucha", a ruthless Mexico City gang, who has just recruited 12-year old 'Smiley' to a life of patrolling territory, hanging out with homies, and killing their enemies. When the leader of MS kills Willy’s girlfriend, he defies the gang and has to escape on the immigrant train headed for the United States border.

The look of the film is beautifully disgusting. Much of Mexico City’s poorest areas pour onto the screen with the mange and disease that one would expect. The rust of the train yard, the dirt-caked housing, the grind of the countryside. You can almost smell the landscape.

Sweet, severe and haunting, Sin Nombre is a story about hope for people that shouldn’t even know the word. It tells an endearing story, shares the lives of two compassionate yet real characters, and offers a sense of what life for some is like.

Koyaanisqatsi

(from Wikipedia)
The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse photography of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means 'crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living'[1], and the film implies that modern humanity is living in such a way. The film is the first in the Qatsi trilogy of films: it is followed by Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). The trilogy depicts different aspects of the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Koyaanisqatsi is the best known of the trilogy and is considered a cult film.

I’m sure that most of you are fans of Stanley Kubrick therefore its redundancy to recommend his movies here. However if you are a starter, I’ll spill out the name of my favourite A Clockwork Orange.  Smiley

Anyways let me warn you before you start reading this post that it’s going to be pretty loong as I am about to tell you of a few movies that caught my attention during the last few ( unoccupied) days of mine.

The first would be
Hellevator : The bottled Fools

This one is going to stick in your mind for a while. It’s truly unique and damn good for a movie where no actor was actually paid for taking part!

The whole movie is captured on a dingy yellowish greenish colour scheme. It may give every sign of a low budget movie but then again every cent has only contributed to its unique nature.

The plot is pretty straight forward and can’t say the movie will change your life forever or something of that sort. But it will leave a scar in your brain for a while. Its fun, original and suspenseful.

Then there is …

A Scanner Darkly

This movie is all about abuse. Abuse of power, drug abuse and abuse of friendships and abuse of the self. A Scanner Darkly is a movie with great acting, interesting discussions and a very powerful ending.

That said, some parts of Scanner Darkly come off as overkill (the drugs are bad part, for instance), whereas others could easily have benefited from more elaboration. Still, these are minor complaints, as the overall movie has terrific acting, a great score (by Radiohead), and an interesting, well constructed message.

This is NOT an action movie. The vast bulk involves people milling around and talking, without any real action ever taking place. As long as action isn’t necessary for you to enjoy...

Also,
Videodrome

Now David Cronenberg knows how to create movies which are beyond this world! Ammooo!  Shocked You might want to pause this movie and slow your breath while watching. I haven’t seen anything quite like this before.

I’m sorry I cudnt find a good trailer for the movie . therefore I’m going to be a meanie and spoil it for you… watch this ONLY  if you don’t want to see the movie.

Watch it online  at

My next movie is

The Spirit of the Beehive

A most exceptional vision of the inner life of a child just learning about the darker complexities of life. It focuses on a young girl's obsession with the Frankenstein monster. Smiley

Messenger, David Cronenberg is beyond fucked up. When I was 16, I was fortunate enough to read the screenplay to his movie 'Crash'. If you guys haven't seen it then I highly recommend it those of you who are on the right side of 18. Weird as fuck.  Warning: some of the scenes may make you belch.

Crash was as bizzare as it can get when it comes to Cronenberg. It vaguely gave me an idea as to what length a human woud stretch himself to scratch an itch.

Koyaanisqatsi was good. But nothing beats Baraka, for me. Gummo, The Holy Mountain, Suspiria and Un Chien Andalou were similar movies too.

Anyone who's seen the Wristcutters and I heart Huckabees?

Absolutely. I need to watch it with a dispassionate view though. The movie stirs some strong emotions early on and, as a viewer, I found it difficult to continue watching. Part of that, I suspect, was because I read the screenplay and new how it'd come to pass.

I need to get hold of Koyaanisqatsi. Baraka is beautiful. A true work of art.

Thanks for the recommendations!

A couple of good horror flicks with added substance

That feeling you get when ur standing on the edge of a very tall building looking down. Yes that weird but addictive tingling sensation...

Here's a little preview I sorted some time ago. Dinner would go really well with these movies. Especially pasta and red meat sauce.

Cube is a Canadian science fiction/horror film series. The three films directed by Vincenzo Natali, Andrzej Sekuła and Ernie Barbarash respectively.

The three movies are each based on the same premise; there is a gigantic, mechanical, cube-shaped structure (the purpose and origin of which is almost completely unknown) that is made up of lots of smaller cube-shaped rooms. Each of these rooms has 6 doors, one on each wall and one on the ceiling and one on the floor, which lead into adjacent, identical rooms, only differing by color. Some of these rooms are safe, while others are equipped with booby traps such as flamethrowers and razorwire which kill a person who enters the room (in some cases it is possible to detect a trap by throwing a boot into the room first) (except in Cube 2: Hypercube where the traps are less distinct — in the form of an abstract shape and visual effects — and less predictable).

In each case, a group of strangers awakens in this mysterious structure, without any knowledge of how they got there or why they are there. In order to escape from the prison, however, they must band together and use their combined skills and talents to avoid the traps and navigate out of the maze, while also trying to solve the mystery of what the cube is and why they are in it. However, the pressure of being in the cube usually drives one of the characters insane, and they start killing the others.

Cube (1997) the first movie follows a group of seven frightened strangers who find themselves trapped in a bizarre maze of cube-shaped rooms, with no memory of how they arrived there. Searching for a way out, they soon discover that many rooms contain lethal booby-traps, whilst others are safe. Initially the prisoners band together in attempt to escape, however as their stay becomes longer the prisoners begin to fight each other because of the stress of their imprisonment. Despite the film's low budget, it achieved moderate commercial success and has developed a cult following due to its surreal, Kafkaesque setting.

Cube 2: Hypercube (2002) is modelled on the original.
The dusky, dingy rooms of the first film are replaced with high-tech, brightly-lit rooms, and the conventional technology of the original traps are replaced with ultra-tech threats based on abstract mathematics. A new group of prisoners quickly discover that, unlike the original Cube, the rooms in their prison appear to shift instantaneously. They realize they are inside a functioning tesseract in which gravity, space and time are distorted. This time the prisoners each have a connection to the cube's suggested creator.

Cube Zero (2004) is a prequel to Cube. Unlike the first two movies, which were limited to the prisoners' point of view, the film concerns two characters, Eric Wynn and Dodd, who are technicians observing the prisoners. Wynn finds himself caring about the fate of Cassandra Rains, a woman in the Cube, and decides to risk his job and his life to help her try to escape.

Watch them here. (Plenty of torrents are there if u want to download it)

Pan's Labyrinth takes place in Spain in May and June, 1944, after the Spanish Civil War, during the Franquist repression. Also present is the main character Ofelia's fantasy world which centers around an overgrown abandoned labyrinth. Ofelia's stepfather, the Falangist Captain Vidal, viciously hunts the Spanish Maquis, guerrillas who fight against the Franco regime in the region, while Ofelia's pregnant mother grows increasingly ill. Ofelia meets several strange and magical creatures who become central to her story, leading her through the trials of the old labyrinth garden. The film employs make-up, puppetry, and CGI effects to create its creatures.
