Four Minutes (Vier Minuten)[/u]

Country: Germany
Subtitles: Hard Coded English
Format: AVI (800MB)

The setting is a women's prison, where 80-year-old Traude teaches piano to a grand total of four inmates. She has worked at the prison since World War II, when it was run as a Nazi hospital.

As you might imagine, life for Traude (Monica Bleibtreu) isn't very exciting. Then Jenny von Loeben, a 20-year-old killer, arrives. As a child, Jenny was a successful classical pianist, but life didn't work out the way she would have liked. Now she is a murderer & prone to out bursts of extreme violence.

But she recognizes the girls pure talent, and decides to help Jenny enter a national piano competition for people under 21.

After "Let the Right One In" this is one of the most beautifully directed pieces of art I've seen this year .

Dammit, Hyro. We need to meet so that I can get some movies off of you. Thanks for the brilliant recommendations.

Four Minutes (Vier Minuten) was just brilliant. It's engaging and uplifting with some humour sprinkled here and there. I recently watched Shawshank Redemption again, one of the best movies I've seen and this is going down right next to it in my personal favourites. Thank you Hyro.

I wonder if there's anyone who has seen Punishment Park..

Wow, thanks for bringing up this brilliant film - the original  'Battle Royale', some might even say. Have you seen 'The War Game'? It's another one by Peter Watkins about a Soviet nuclear attack on Britain, done in the same kind of alternative-history style of his and released some time in the 60s I think. Funded by the BBC again except they panicked when they first saw the film and decided not to broadcast it.  8-)

Anyway, Watkins' movies seem to have an eerie relevance today. I think they might make a lot of people feel distinctly twitchy after watching.
